Genes for hormone free regeneration
Transient expression of 2 genes circumvents the need for cytokinin and auxin
KeyGene reference: P209
Invention
Plant regeneration is essential in processes such as genetic modification. The invention provides a construct for hormone-independent plant regeneration. Transient expression of WOX5 and PLT encompassed on the construct circumvents the need for cytokinin and auxin in highly effective shoot regeneration.
Benefit
Genome editing technologies are rapidly emerging. A bottleneck in plant genome editing is the capacity of edited plant cells to regenerate into fertile and healthy plants. Especially for recalcitrant plant species, the fraction of cells successfully regenerating into plants is usually quite low. The patented technology increases the ability of such plants to regenerate, thereby increasing the chance of regenerating plants from edited protoplasts.
Vision
Efficient targeted genome editing technologies are important research tools in gene validation and may be used for the introduction of new traits in crop germplasm. By improving the hormone-free regeneration of plant cells that may be edited, the present invention contributes thereto.
