Diplospory gene
Converting diplospory to a plant
KeyGene reference: P073
Invention
The invention provides for a gene(fragment) capable of converting diplospory to a plant.
Benefits
Diplospory refers to the derivation of an unreduced, non-recombined embryo sac from the megaspore mother cell by mitotic division or aborted meiotic events. The present invention provides a way to induce diplospory to a plant as part of apomixis.
Vision
Apomixis is of great interest in agriculture because it has the power to fix a favorable genotype, regardless of its genetic complexity, and allows the production of organisms that can breed true in one step.
