The invention provides for a method to improve fertility and pollen viability in interspecific hyrbids, using compounds that inhibit the MRN-ATM pathway. Also provided are compounds for use in this method.

Benefits

The present invention is in particular useful to overcome reproductive barriers in interspecific hybrid breeding. Current methods to circumvent such problems include laborious bud pollination, ovule cultures and embryo rescue, but to date there is no efficient method to influence fertility and pollen viability in interspecific F1s. The present invention provides for an effective method to increase pollen viability of such interspecific hybrids.

Vision

Introgression breeding is of high relevance for plant breeding as it allows for introgression of novel traits from wild relatives of crop plants. This enables breeders to make use of the enormous wealth of natural genetic variation that is present in wild species, which supports the continuous adaptation of crops to altered biotic and abiotic stresses.
